Analysis for sands and silts after Janbu

For sands and silts the stress exponent j receives the value around 0,5, for the reference stress σr = 100 kPa the resulting settlement equals to the sum of partial settlements of individual layers. It can be derived from the following formula:

where: σor,i vertical component of geostatic stress in the middle of ith layer
σz,i vertical component of incremental stress (e.g. stress due to structure surcharge) inducing layer compression
mi Janbu modulus in the ith layer
hi thickness of the ith layer
