Definition of Interface in Borehole

Thickness of layers are defined in the boreholes, it determines the position of layers.

In some cases, the layer is not within the borehole - then we have three options how to define such layer:

  • - enter thickness "0" m - generation of model is performed normally, just in the point (borehole coordinates) the thickness layer is equal to zero. The final model usually does not correspond to real state.

On the picture is the model of erosion with layers of zero thickness in the borehole S2 - the result is not realistic.

Layers with "zero thickness" above borehole S2

  • do not define an interface in the borehole - when generating model, no points of layer interface are added in the position of borehole. It can be used when modeling soil lenses or faults and also when borehole is not deep enough and we do not know the lower layers. Location of not defined layers are than determined by surrounding boreholes.

  • define depth of lower interface - the interface is generated with input depth of layer in the position of borehole. The depth is measured from the top of the borehole, positive values downward, negative upward.

This option can be used for soil lenses modeling or editing of layers shape. In some cases, the order of interface generation is very important.
